Course objectives

  • Knowledge of the embryogenetic and morphogenetic processes, with particular attention to the development of the main systems and organs.
  • Relationship between developmental alterations and pediatric pathologies. 
  • Knowledge of the main pathologies of gynaecological competence (diagnosis, clinical evolution and therapeutic approach).
  • Acquisition of notions of good clinical practice that will allow the physician, in carrying out her/his profession, a correct therapeutic approach towards family planning and medicine for the elderly.
  • Learning the basic knowledge about female genital tract and breast anatomy and physiology, and the physiopathology of pregnancy, delivery and puerperium  
  • Learning the management of the main gynecologic diseases in terms of diagnosis, clinical course and treatment.
  • Acquiring the basic principles of the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic hormonal anomalies, including patient counselling about contraceptive options.
  • Learning the benefits and the limits of the screening tests available in gynecologic oncology, and the subsequent diagnostic and therapeutic management of this type of tumours.
  • Understanding the main area of interest of the child and adolescent neuropsychiatry, in terms of main disorders of child and adolescent neuropsychiatry competence, their diagnosis, their clinical presentation and therapeutic approaches.
  • Becoming familiar with fundamental features of C&A neuropsychiatry way of working in a team, taking care of patients and families, ensuring longitudinal follow up.
  • Becoming familiar with developmental and child psychiatric disorders, assessment procedures and treatment approaches.
  • Recognizing and evaluating the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, including parental illness and developmental disability.
  • Understanding the relationship between physical, cognitive, emotional, social and developmental factors that contribute to emotional behavioural difficulties or more serious mental illness.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to

  • recognize the clinical presentation of the main gynecologic diseases and describe their clinical management in terms of diagnosis and treatment; have the basic knowledge of the normal course of pregnancy and the main disorders by which it can be affected, in terms of maternal pathologies and anomalies of fetal development, and to describe their diagnostic and therapeutic management.
  • recognize main Child and adolescent neuropsychiatric disorders, their severity and know how to diagnose and fundamentals of treatment; recognize neurodevelopmental disorders, their aetiology, comorbidities, diagnostic criteria, treatment options; recognize the main clinical presentation of psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence; manage epileptic seizures, febrile seizures and to perform the neurological examination in children.

GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS

  • Gynaecology
    • Anatomy of the female reproductive tract. Physiology of the hypophyseal and ovarian functions. The menstrual cycle.
    • Gynecologic Endocrinology: Amenorrhea. Chronic anovulation. Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Hyperandrogenism. Adrenogenital syndrome. Hormonal contraception. Menopause, climacteric syndrome and hormone replacement therapy. 
    • Benign Gynecologic Diseases: Abnormal uterine bleeding. Uterine myomas. Endometrial polyps and hyperplasia. Endometriosis. Ovarian cysts. Urogynecology: pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence. Infectious diseases of the genital tract. Vulvar dermatoses.
    • Gynecologic Oncology: Ovarian, endometrial, cervical and vulvar cancer. Gestational trophoblastic disease. Screening tests for cervical and breast cancer.
    • Senology: Benigne breast diseases. Breast cancer. BRCA1-associated hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome
  • Obstetrics
    • Physiology and monitoring of the pregnancy: Maternal physiological changes in pregnancy. Normal development of the embryo and the fetus. Placental anatomy and physiology. Prenatal screening and diagnostic tests. Basis of fetal biophysical monitoring. Labour and vaginal delivery 
    • Fetal and maternal pathologies: Congenital developmental defects and their diagnosis. Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Preterm labour and premature rupture of membranes. Infective diseases in pregnancy. Antepartum haemorrhage: placental abruption, placenta previa. Alloimmunization in pregnancy. Induction of labour. Labour dystocia, operative delivery and caesarean section. Multiple pregnancy.
    • Reproductive Medicine: Miscarriage. Recurrent pregnancy loss. Ectopic pregnancy. Infertility and assisted reproduction techniques.

Written exam: multiple choice and short open-ended questions (10 questions/module)
