Prerequisites
The prerequisite for the Physics Course is a basic knowledge of Mathematics and Physics as learnt at College. All along the Course, these basic concepts will be reviewed.
Propedeutic for
Physics is not officially propedeutic for any other course. But I think it is very fair to say that the skills acquired in the Physics course allow the best assimilation of the concepts taught during the second year in the Physiology course, and in several other courses of the following years.

Course objectives

The Student will acquire the tools of analysis necessary for a reasonable understanding of the physical phenomena involved in life sciences.

Results of learning outcomes

The goal of Physics teaching is to be able to correctly analyze and solve a complex problem, as experienced in clinics every day. Being able to use the Scientific Method and to handle easily an order of magnitude calculations and factorization of solutions is the first goal. Once this is obtained, it is time to acquire the basics of all the physical laws that underlie medical phenomena. At the end of the teaching, Students will be able to use the physical laws and the mathematical tools all along most of the subjects that will be part of the Medicine and Surgery Course and Specialization School.

Course delivery

IMPORTANT

1) The Students who have Physics ALO/OFA (Additional Learning Obligations/Obblighi Formativi Aggiuntivi) cannot use Physics Online. They have to follow the Physics Course in presence, that is carried out during the 2nd semester.

2) The Students that do not have Physics ALO/OFA and decide to follow Physics Online must sit the exam in presence either in December or in February. If they do not succeed in December or February, they have to follow the Physics Course in presence, that is carried out during the 2nd semester.

=================================================================

The Physics Online Course has to be followed on the start@unito platform (https://start.unito.it/).

It is a self paced Course; this means that the Student can follow it with her/his timing.

After having followed the Course (Theory and Exercises), the Student has to undertake the Online Exam, that is mandatory to access the Exam in presence. In the following section (Learning assessment methods) it is described in detail how the Exam in presence is held.

Any questions, please send me an email: roberto.cirio@unito.it

Learning assessment methods

I very very strongly suggest you sit it as soon as possible (June/July or, AT LATEST, September). It is important that you sit Physics before starting the second year, so that you can take advantage of the things we learn and that you will use in the other Courses. The sooner, the better!

Suggestions to succeed at the Physics exam:

  • study the Theory
  • be sure to be able to apply Theory solving Exercises.  See them on Moodle (activities, assignments, written tests of previous years).

Written exam: you can find on the Moodle of the Physics course examples of the written tests of last year. This way you can easily understand the flavour of the written test you will undergo.

If you succeed in the written test (that is, a grade equal to or higher than 18), you must sit the oral exam.

Oral exam: I will ask 3 questions (one of them on a subject chosen by you). The 3 questions will start describing things as usual (as an example, I might ask: "Talk about Surface tension.").

The final grade will be the mean value of the grade obtained at the written and the grade obtained at the oral.

Any questions, please send me an email: roberto.cirio@unito.it
