Course objectives

The student must acquire adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in Audiology fields, for adult and pediatric age. The competencies must concern the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and clinic.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students have the fundamentals of the topographical anatomy of the auditory and the vestibular system; in more detail, the students must have specific knowledge on clinical case, semeiological data, diagnostic imaging and principles of diagnosis and medical and/or surgical therapy.

Course delivery

The course includes 10 hours of lectures.

Learning assessment methods

The course program will be check with the students at the end of the course.

The exam will consist of a multiple choice test (16 questions).

Program

Elements of anatomy, physiology and semeiotics of the ear. Methods of diagnosis; subjective and objective audiometry tests, radiological diagnosis. Types of hearing loss,  infant hearing loss, presbycusis. Pathologies of the outer ear (malformations, inflammation and obstructions). Pathologies of the middle ear (secretive otitis media, acute and chronic purulent otitis media, infant otitis, tympanomsclerosis, fibro-adhesive otitis media) and complications. Otosclerosis, acoustic neurinoma, surgical treatment of severe hearing loss: cochlear implants. Anatomy and physiology of the vestibular apparatus, methods of diagnosis, types of vertigo, Ménière’s disease.
