Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the tools in order to:
- Understand the significance of Medicine in its multifaceted aspects.
- Recognize the mission and key elements of the specialized Medicine and Surgery Degree Course at San Luigi.
- Develop a critical analysis capacity in relation to the students current role in the specialized Medicine and Surgery Degree Course at San Luigi.
- Develop a critical analysis capacity in relation to the role of a physician within a profession, organization, community, and a certain socio-cultural context.

Results of learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Use the methods of active pedagogy and the tools offered by the undergraduate course (core curriculum, problem-based learning, teamwork, internship or clinical pathways) to self-diagnose training needs and evaluate performance (today as a learner, tomorrow as a professional)
- Reflect on the continuum between health, sickness and disease and the role of determinants of good and poor health
- Recognize the centrality of the person and the community in their professional practice
- Recognize the need for an evidence-based approach to individual health problems and / or population
- Identify the definition of health, society and medicine as well as ethical standards and value choices associated with his/her professional figure, particularly in relation with the themes of the beginning and the end of life and the transition from childhood to adolescence
- Discuss the triad illness/sickness/disease
- Discuss the significance of compassion and empathy in a person-centered healthcare
- Discuss the transition to precision medicine and error in medicine
- Reflect on themselves, as persons, potential patients, and professionals in an organization

Course delivery
A student-centered pedagogical approach focused on the health needs of individuals and the community, using tools such as discovery learning, working in small groups, peer education, flipped classrooms, as well as experience in a protected professional environment (EPP – INTERPROFESSIONAL CLERCKSHIP).

The evaluation will be composed of:
- An individual essay (formative evaluation).

Program
The course will cover one semester, with module on safety in workplace concentrated in January 2021 (16 hours)
- Module to introduce the course and pedagogical tools in medical education (and the "logbook") (2 hours)
- Introductory module to prevention (4 hours)
- Introductory module on evidence based medicine (2 hours)
- Introductory module on NHS organisation (6 hours)
- Introductory module on the clinic (6 hours)
- Module on history of medicine (6 hours)
- Module on safety in workplace (16 hours)
