Course objectives

  • To provide students with practically useful advice on epidemiology, specific symptoms, course, clinical complications and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  • To deepen the clinical presentation of mood disorders, schizophrenia and related disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, neurocognitive disorders and substance-related and addictive disorders;
  • To provide knowledge on the general principles of prescribing antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and benzodiazepines and to specify their clinical indications;
  • To provide knowledge on drugs acting on the central nervous system
  • To give an overview of emergency psychiatry and compulsory admission procedures;
  • To show the main characteristics of psychotherapeutic techniques and their applications in clinical practice.

  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorders;
  • Knowledge of the main treatments in psychiatry: medications and psychosocial interventions;
  • Knowledge of history, chemical structure, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic, therapeutic effects and unwanted side effects of drugs used for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases;
  • Managing psychiatric disorders and their treatments in a general practice setting.

 From September 2021 onwards, the teaching is delivered in attendance with registration.

Learning assessment methods

From September 2021 onwards, the psychiatry exam will be a written test (multiple choice questions) in attendance with an optional oral examination

Only for students who cannot be present at the course site, for proven reasons of:

  • fragility
  • temporary absence from the regional or national territory for serious documentable needs

an oral examination will be held through Cisco Webex Meetings.

  • Drugs used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia and related disorders, eating disorders, Parkinson disease and epilepsy. Drug abuse;
  • Compulsory admission procedures, interface of law and psychiatry, principles of ethics.
