MD-PhD Program
The MD-PhD Program is the pathway of the School of Medicine that trains students in both medicine and research. This pathway is designed for medical students with outstanding potential and strong motivation to become research physicians (also known as physician-scientists).
Throughout the six years of the Master’s Degree, the students will take all the regular courses in the curriculum as well as a number of additional courses focusing on advanced research topics. At the end of their six years, they will be awarded a MD-PhD certificate alongside their Master’s Degree. Students can then choose, but are not compelled, to enrol in the PhD Program of the School on a shortened pathway.
Applications to the MD-PhD program are open to students registered for the second year of any Italian Medical degree program. The assessment of candidates is based on their academic record and on an entrance examination.
Six to ten students are admitted to the MD-PhD program every year. Students admitted to the MD-PhD program have their fees waived, are awarded a scholarship for maintenance expenses and can also apply for free housing in a university residence.
