Thesis and Graduation

The six-year postgraduate degree thesis is worth eighteenth credits in your degree program. To be admitted to the final examination, students must have attended all the courses and passed the exams. The thesis is an original piece of writing produced by the student under the guidance of a supervisor.

Thesis work is a first approach to scientific research. It should have a character of originality. It may either be structured as: a. a literature review thesis (tesi compilativa); or b. an experimental thesis (tesi sperimentale) that may include data analysis, clinical or preclinical investigation, basic review, systematic review or meta-analysis.

Literature review: This type of thesis includes a bibliographic research and a discussion of a relevant topic based on the sources. No personal contribution is needed. An example of this might be a thesis titled: “Effectiveness of herniated disc rehabilitation treatments”. This work may get quite difficult and lengthy, and analysis and synthesis skills are required. Make sure to define your topic appropriately with the help of your supervisor.

Below is an example of contents structure of a Literature review:

  • State of the art
  • Objective of the review
  • Criteria of the bibliographic review
  • Description of the bibliographic review
  • Final summary of the salient points

Experimental thesis: This work adds a personal contribution to the literature review or frames a known problem in a new light. In this type of thesis actual research needs to be undertaken, which may take a long time and require both organizational skills and the ability to go in depth on the chosen topic.

Below is an example of contents structure of an Experimental thesis:

  • Scientific context / Introduction
  • Objective of the thesis
  • Materials and methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions

Regardless of the thesis type, the thesis must be written in English. The thesis work will be supervised by a lecturer of your choice among those teaching in the six-year postgraduate degree programme at the School of Medicine. You will need to think of a thesis topic and submit your proposal to your prospective supervisor, either by e-mail or at an office hour appointment.

An examiner will also be nominated by the Dean of the Degree Programme.

COVER & TITLE PAGE

Your thesis will need to come complete with cover and frontispiece (title page). The color of the cover of the thesis in Medicine and Surgery is burgundy (bordeaux in Italian), while the color of the text on the cover is gold.

The title page is the first page of the thesis.

Students of the University of Turin are invited to use the official thesis title page template:

The payment of the professional qualification fee is independent of any fees required to register to your local “Ordine dei medici” (i.e., the list of practicing doctors and surgeons). For information regarding this registration, please contact the relevant “Ordine” after your graduation.

More information is available on the Medical Internships webpage.

The procedures for the recognition of Italian titles and qualifications abroad and the required documentation to obtain such recognition depend on the specific rules and legislation of the country where such recognition is being sought.

No supranational or automatic recognition between different countries exists, therefore. Even in the case of bilateral or multilateral agreements referring to recognition, it will always be necessary to submit a recognition request or undergo an evaluation procedure in the foreign system.
