Course objectives

The present module aims at providing students with:

  • an introduction to clinical oncology
  • an overview of the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of the most important neoplasms: breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cell carcinoma, testicular cancer, hepatocarcinoma, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, melanoma.
  • an overview of the molecular technologies which are currently used to study oncogenic lesions at the genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic level, as well as to approach precision cancer diagnosis, prognosis and therapy
  • an overview of the use of radiotherapy in the most frequent neoplasms and its integration with the available oncological therapies

Results of learning outcomes

  • Students are expected to develop a good general knowledge of epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of the most important neoplasms.
  • Students are expected to develop a good general knowledge of the post-genomic molecular technologies currently used to assess cancer genetic predisposition, to diagnose cancers at an early stage, to classify cancers, to assess prognosis and to identify specific targets for personalized therapy.

Course delivery

Theoretical lessons.

In case of persistence of the health emergency due to COVID-19, the curse will be delivered remotely, using the WebEx platform. All didactic materials will be published on the Moodle platform.

Communications with students take place through e-mail and require registration on the Campusnet web page of the teaching course.
