Course objectives

The aim of the Course is to provide knowledge of the rational bases of drug therapy and the clinical applications of drugs, with specific insights on the molecular mechanisms of drug action and pharmacokinetics. At the end of the Course, the Student will be able to evaluate and describe the general properties of drugs, providing their possible clinical applications, taking into consideration chemical structure, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and connections between pharmacological effects and adverse drug reactions.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the Course, the Student will acquire knowledge and understanding of i) general principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, ii) main factors involved in the variability of drug response, iii) mechanisms of action of chemiotherapy and drugs acting on  nervous and cardiovascular system. Applying the knowledge and understanding acquired with the lectures and integrating them with those derived by other biomedical and clinical courses, the Student should be able to understand the rational bases for the clinical use of drugs, predicting the pharmacological effects both from diagnostic/therapeutic and toxicological point of view.

In particular, the learning outcomes will be:

  • Knowledge and understanding ability

the Student will be able to learn and understand the topics of the Pharmacology program

  • Applying knowledge and understanding

the Student will be able to apply the knowledge and to understand Pharmacology with diagnostic, preventive, curative and surgical purposes

  • Independent Judgement

the Student will be able to develop a good judgment and analysis autonomy on pharmacological problems

  • Communication skills

the Student will be able to develop good communication skills and suitable language properties in the didactic field

  • Learning skills

the Student will be able to develop functional organizational and learning skills in future institutional settings.

Learning assessment methods

1) The exam includes a written test on the moodle platform. It is organized into four modules (one per teacher) each consisting of 8 multiple choice questions (one correct answer) and one open question relating to the program.

2) For each correct answer a point will be assigned and a maximum of 4 for the open question. The total of points for each module is 12. Wrong answers will not lead to negative evaluations in the overall score.

3) the time available for the test is 90 minutes; the tests relating to the 4 modules must be taken in the same session.

4) the student will have passed the exam if he reaches the minimum score of 7 points out of 12 in each of the 4 modules. Otherwise, he will have to retake the entire test. Global evaluation will be the median of all modules.
