Course objectives

Objectives of the General Thoracic Surgery course are a) to improve knowledge in major surgical diseases of the chest and their pathophysiological consequences b) to develop ability in defining proper diagnostic preoperative protocols and surgical indications c) to acquire basic competence in safe management of chest drain

1. Introduction - Preoperative functional evaluation - Surgical access and type of lung resection

2. Lung cancer: diagnosis, staging and surgical treatment

3. Infections and chronic infiammatory lung disease - Acute infective disease

4. Pneumothorax - Chest drain

5. Bullectomy, lung volume reduction and lung transplantation

6. Pleural empyema - Chylothorax

7. Recurrente pleural effusion - Pleural mesothelioma

8 Open and blunt chest trauma

9. Carcinoid - Lung metastases

10. Mediastinal tumors

11. Tracheal stenosis - Tracheal tumors

12. Chest wall tumors - Congenital chest wall deformity

13. Thymic biology - Miastenia gravis
