Course objectives
The course syllabus aims to provide the non-native Italian speaking student with the basic skills and knowledge of the Italian language for the future understanding of a medical-clinical context to enable interaction and communication during the clerkship of the medical degree course in English.
The Italian Language Course ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS/A1 LOWER LEVEL ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSE for non-Italian native speakers (20 hours) aims at:
- Teaching of basic grammar concepts above all verb tenses, the use of definite and indefinite articles, and prepositions; reading, listening, speaking and comprehension techniques, at a basic level for non-Italian native speakers;
- Focus on pronunciation of Italian vocabulary;
- Everyday situational dialogues focussing on interaction and verbal communication, such as asking and answering questions about personal details of self and others, asking for information, asking for directions;
- Reading, listening and comprehension simple exercises using scientific-medical terms with appropriate feedback and debate;
- Role play (taking a medical history of medical clerkship contexts and others).

Results of learning outcomes
At the end of the Absolute Beginners and A1 Lower Level course the student will be able to:
- provide personal information/details in Italian;
- interact and communicate in Italian about everyday situations at a satisfactory level;
- read and understand basic documents such as completing forms;
- ask and answer health related questions in Italian (A1/2 level).

During the course the following topics will be covered in the A1 Italian language Course.
- basic grammar concepts, above all verb tenses, modal verbs (see pdf attachment);
- principal language functions;
- basic medical language functions;
- basic medical vocabulary;
- basic medical comprehension exercises.
The 20 hours of the Absolute Beginners and A1 Lower Level Course focuses on:
- teaching of grammar concepts, reading, listening and comprehension techniques at a basic level;
- reading, listening and comprehension of simplified medical forms with appropriate feedback;
- role play of clerkship situations in a medical-clinical context.

The learning Modality is based on various techniques, such as:
- the traditional lecture with slides/notes/text book;
- interactive oral communication and feedback;
- situational role play;
- recorded lectures.

Learning assessment methods
The Italian “A1 Lower” Language Progress Test.
The progress test will be carried out at the end of the first semester.
Total time 1 hour for the written paper and 5 minutes each for the oral test.
Both tests, written and oral aimed at non-Italian native speakers, will consist of a pass/fail test based on concepts learned during the Italian Language Course.
