Course objectives
The course syllabus aims to provide the non-native Italian speaking student with further skills and knowledge of the Italian language for the future understanding of a medical-clinical context to enable interaction and communication during the clerkship of the medical degree course in English.
The Italian Language Course for non-Italian native speakers (20 hours) A1 UPPER LEVEL /A2 ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSE aims at:
- Teaching further grammar concepts above all more complex verb tenses, the use of definite and indefinite articles, and complex prepositions; reading, listening, speaking and comprehension techniques, at an intermediate level for non- Italian native speakers;
- More complex everyday situational dialogues
- Reading, listening and comprehension exercises using scientific-medical terms with appropriate feedback and debate;
- Role play of medical clerkship contexts such as medical examination of the patient and others.

Results of learning outcomes
At the end of the A1 Upper Level /A2 Italian Language Course. the student will be able to:
- interact and communicate in Italian at an intermediate level
- read and grasp the meaning of specific medical texts as per clerkship;
- know and understand the meaning of specific medical vocabulary;
- translate health/clinical documents into Italian; ask and answer health related questions in Italian.

During the course, the following topics will be covered in the A2 Italian language course:
- further grammar concepts;
- complex language functions;
- medical language functions;
- medical vocabulary;
- basic medical comprehension exercises;
- structure, language and terminology for clerkship.
The 20 hours of the A1 upper level /A2 Course focuses on:
- teaching of grammar concepts, reading, listening and comprehension techniques at an intermediate level;
- reading, listening and comprehension of medical texts with appropriate feedback;
- introducing medical-clinical topics with guided questions for interaction;
- role play of clerkship situations in a medical- clinical context.

Course delivery
The learning Modality is based on various teaching techniques such as:
- the traditional lecture with slides/notes/text book;
- interactive oral communication and feedback;
- situational role play;
- recorded lectures.

Learning assessment methods
The Italian “A1 Upper” Language Progress Test.
The progress test will be carried out at the end of the first semester.
Total time 1 hour for the written paper and 5 minutes each for the oral test.
Both tests, written and oral aimed at non-Italian native speakers, will consist of a pass/fail test based on concepts learned during the Italian Language Course.
