Course objectives

The course will introduce the student to the context and practice of medicine for individuals and groups in condition of vulnerability, facilitating the capacity of the student to plan internship in medical centres in the reality of developing countries and in the poorest settings of developed countries, such as reception centres for asylum seekers and refugees or homeless.

  •  To discuss the positive and negative health implications of globalization
  • To describe the health inequalities experienced by individuals in condition of vulnerability
  • To understand the methods of Health Equity Audit
  • To assess the quality of an Health Equity Audit in different situations of vulnerability
  • To discuss the legal implications of the definition of the right to health and health care in the International and Italian legislation
  • To draw conclusions about the policy and planning implications for international cooperation for health and for immigration

Knowledge and understanding

  • knowledge and understanding of health inequalities in a globalized world;
  • knowledge of social determinants of health including migration;
  • knowledge and understanding of mechanism of generation of health inequalities;
  • knowledge of methods of Health Equity Audit;
  • knowledge of legislation on health rights;
  • knowledge of international bodies and international cooperation.

 Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

  • to plan Health Equity Audit in the more vulnerable contexts;
  • to use tools for the evaluation of an Health Equity Audit;
  • to use and integrate knowledge of public health and law sciences in the frame of health and migration issues;
  • to interpret the professional and policy implications of health and migration issues;

 Judgment autonomy

  • to take decisions for clinical practice based on results of Health Equity Audit;
  • to evaluate the adequacy of policy response in the domain of migration and health and international cooperation.

 Ability to communicate

  • to describe the more promising story-telling on health inequalities for advocacy purposes;
  • to communicate the story-telling to the fellow students.
