Course objectives

Public Health

The aims of the module are the following

  • to analyse epidemiological data on the health of the population suggesting possible causes of geographical variations and temporal trends in the distribution of diseases and risk factors
  • to identify the mechanisms responsible for inequalities in health in order to tackle them with effective policies
  • to measure how much health could be gained through appropriate primary and seondary prevention strategies
  • to value advantages and critical points of different health systems and to know the organization of the Italian Health National System 

Statistics

The aims of the module are the following

  • to provide the students with critical tools to set up the statistican analysis of a database according to the design of the study
  • to become familiar with the use of a statistical software
  • to carry out a standard statistical analysis
  • to interpret and discuss the results obtained

Forensic Medicine

The aims of the module are the following

  • to understand the legal framework of medical obligations towards patients, judiciary and the public
  • to understand the legal framework of medical liabilty
  • to critically evaluate forensic problems related to the ascertainment of death and its causes

Occupational Medicine:

The aims of the module are the following

  • to provide the basic knowledge of occupational diseases (by physical, chemical and biological agents) through critical analysis of clinical cases
  • to evaluate of the results of the occupational medical examination
  • to manage the legal obligations in occupational medicine

Results of learning outcomes

  1. At the end of the Public Health module, students will be able to:
  • read and discuss epidemiological data
  • discuss mechanisms of generation and contrast of health inequalities 
  • discuss main interventions for primary and secondary prevention 
  • suggest clinical pathways in NHS, particularly regarding frail groups
  • discuss main mechanisms of NHS functioning
  • discuss main models of health systems in the world
  • discuss benefits and criticisms of various health systems
  • discuss core concepts of health economics 

At the end of the Forensic Medicine module, students will be:

  • knowledge and understanding of the most relevant laws and regulations that govern the practice of medicine in Italy
  • ability to identify and describe injuries caused by the most common mechanisms of wounding

Statistics

  • Descriptive analysis of the study sample
  • How to choose the most appropriate statistical test
  • Comparison of means / medians and how to perform a test on binary variables
  • How to carry out a regression analysis

Arguments will be ilustrated through case studies analyzed with the R software 

Forensic Medicine

  • Principles of criminal law: Crimes against life and security of individuals; IPV, sexual assault, duty to report to judicial authority, professional secrecy
  • Other relevant health legislation: pregnancy termination, medically assisted reproduction
  • Death certification, organ donation and transplant regulations, thanatology and PMI estimation
  • Consent to medical treatment (law n° 219/2017)
  • Elements of medical liability (law n° 24/2017)
  • Elements of forensic thanatology and pathology

Occupational Medicine

  • Major occupational diseases from physical, chemical and biological agents
  • Risk assessment in occupational scenarios: exposure evaluation
  • Principles of Industrial Toxicology
  • Biological Monitoring in the workplace
  • Medical surveillance according to DL 81/2008

Formal lessons and exercises, simulations, problem based learing materials, audiovisual materials, suggested readings.

Learning assessment methods

Written test will be structured as follows:

  • Public Health (3 CFU) 4 open questions - 40 minutes
  • Forensic Medicine (3 CFU) open and multiple choice questions - 30 minutes
  • Occupational Medicine (2 CFU) multiple choice questions - 20 minutes
  • Statistic (1 CFU) written test + homework (the homework can grant up to to marks to the final mark for the module)

The expected degree is at least 18/30 for each module, the final result will consist of the weighted mean based on CFU.
