Course objectives
The course syllabus aims to enhance the Student’s skills and knowledge acquired in the previous two years, above all the understanding, assessment, and clinical reasoning of scientific-medical-clinical texts/ cases. Moreover, it aims to supply the student with a good level of effective academic writing skills in order to advance in the medical degree course in English.
Il programma del corso si propone di potenziare le competenze e le conoscenze acquisite dallo Studente nel biennio precedente, soprattutto la comprensione, valutazione e ragionamento clinico di testi/casi scientifico-medico-clinici. Inoltre, mira a fornire allo studente un buon livello di efficaci capacità di scrittura accademica e capacità di comunicazione per avanzare nel corso di laurea in medicina in inglese.

Results of learning outcomes
At the end of the English Course the student will be able to:- evaluate clinical cases and report;
- listen to and understand the meaning of specific scientific and non-specific texts;
- translate and/or summarise a text;
- interact and communicate in English at a good level (beyond B2 level);
- write an abstract/summary;
- prepare a power point presentation and/or a poster presentation on a medical topic.
Al termine del corso di inglese lo studente sarà in grado di:- valutare casi clinici, riassumere e riferire sugli stessi;
- ascoltare e comprendere il significato di testi scientifici specifici e non specifici;
- tradurre e/o riassumere un testo;
- interagire e comunicare in inglese ad un buon livello (oltre il livello b2);
- scrivere un abstract/riassunto;
- presentare un argomento medico/scientifico per il dibattito tramite una presentazione power point e/o un poster scientifico.

- medical English functions;
- medical-scientific-clinical vocabulary;
- reading, listening and comprehension exercises;
- structure, language and terminology for effective scientific writing.
- grammar concepts considering the most commonly used forms in scientific literature
- guided effective academic writing
Durante il corso verranno trattati i seguenti argomenti:- Principali funzioni linguistiche;
- Funzioni di inglese medico;
- Vocabolario medico-scientifico-clinico;
- Esercizi di lettura, ascolto e comprensione;
- Struttura, linguaggio e terminologia per una scrittura scientifica efficace;
- Concetti grammaticali considerando le forme più comunemente utilizzate nella letteratura scientifica;
- Scrittura accademica guidata efficace.

Course delivery
The learning Modality is based on various teaching techniques:1) face-to-face learning;
2) blended learning, which combines face-to-face in-class time with online learning through Moodle and handouts provided by the professor
3) face-to-face learning/peer learning using various activities to enhance oral/aural communication and writing skills
La Modalità di apprendimento si basa su diverse tecniche di insegnamento:- in presenza;
- apprendimento misto che combina lezioni in presenza e online attraverso Moodle e dispense fornite dal docente;
- varie attività per migliorare la comunicazione orale/uditiva e le capacità di scrittura;

Learning assessment methods
Students must submit two abstracts during the course. The deadlines will be provided during the course. The abstracts cannot be handed in for assessment altogether.The final exam will be divided into Test A and Test B:
- Test A consists of an abstract or open questions with short answers/true or false/gapfills/on topics dealt with during the course.
- Test B consists of an oral communication with a power point presentation (including a chart) or a Poster Presentation on a medical/scientific/topic chosen by the student.
In order to pass the exam, the student must obtain 70% correct answers.
Partial pass exam results will not be considered for other exam sessions.Please note: Tests A and B may be subject to change depending on the current situation.
Gli studenti devono consegnare due abstract durante il corso. Le scadenze saranno indicate durante il corso stesso. I due abstract non potranno essere presentati per la valutazione tutti insieme.L'esame finale sarà suddiviso in TEST A e TEST B:
- Il test A consiste in un abstract o in domande aperte con risposte brevi/vero o falso/esercizi di completamento, su argomenti trattati durante il corso.
- Il test B consiste in una presentazione orale in presentazione power point (comprensiva di un grafico) o una poster su un argomento medico/scientifico a scelta dello studente.
Per superare l'esame, lo studente deve ottenere il 70% di risposte corrette.
I risultati parziali degli esami di superamento non saranno presi in considerazione per le altre sessioni d'esame.N.B.: I Test A e B possono subire delle variazioni in base alla situazione corrente.
